Update: Barry Bratton’s Return to USS Midway

September 3, 2025
Previously, we shared the story of our colleague, Barry Bratton, A.A.E., and his service aboard the USS Midway during Operation Desert Storm. Recently, Barry made a return visit to the Midway, now a museum in San Diego, to reconnect with a very personal piece of his past.
While serving as a catapult officer during the Gulf War, Barry received an oversize “I Miss You” card from his wife and young daughter. The card remained on his desk until the day he packed up to return home, when it accidentally slipped behind a built-in desk. More than 30 years later, Barry revisited his old stateroom and, with the help of the museum team, was reunited with that card.
For Barry, it was an emotional moment, especially given that his wife has since passed away. He shared that finding the card felt like receiving a special gift, one that brought back memories not only of his service, but of his family’s love and support during those years apart. The museum staff and docents were equally moved, seeing Barry not just as a visitor, but as part of the ship’s living history. We are honored to share this update with Barry’s permission and invite you to read the full feature, including photos, in Midway Currents: Missing Card Memories – Midway Currents Summer 2025
